Extras
Unlock Stages for Practice Start
On any specific difficulty, complete any stage (the stage will be unlocked
even if you use continues) in the standard Story mode. After completing a
stage, you'll be able to practice on that stage with any character and types
that you've beaten the stage with. If you have beaten Stage 5 with Reimu-A
on Hard, in other words, you'll be able to play Stage 5 in Practice Start using
Reimu-A, but you won't be able to play Stage 5 on Hard with Marisa-A if
you have not yet beat the stage with her.
To unlock Extra, beat the game without using a continue on Normal or
higher difficulty. You'll only be able to play the Extra stage using only characters
or styles that you've managed to beat the game with in this manner.
Strategies and Other
Extra Lives and Bombs
You can get extra lives and bombs on the following stages before
time runs out during the fights:
Extra Lives
- Stage 3: Defeat Meiling as a mid-boss
- Stage 5: Defeat Sakuya as a mid-boss
- Extra Stage: There are 2 in this stage; one from defeating Patchouli,
and one at the very end of the stage, after the last wave of fairies
Additionally, you can gain extra lives at the following marks:
- 1 million points
- 2 million points
- 3 million points
- 4 million points
- 6 million points
Additonally, after you have gained a life when you have max lives (which is
around 8 or 9 lives), you will gain a bomb instead of a life. Keep this in mind
when you play through the levels, if you manage to keep that many lives.
In addition, you cannot gain any extra lives aside from the ones dropped
during the Extra stage by points! Keep this in mind before haphazardly going
after points unless you want to try and score as big as possible.
Bombs
- Stage 2: Defeat Daiyousei
Safe Spots and Strategies
There are a few safe spots during some spell cards and non-spell cards
alike (though for some of these, it more or less depends on you moving very,
very slightly). The following lists the attacks that have complete safe spots
to them:
- Stage 1:
On Hard/Lunatic, during Rumia's "Moonlight Ray", you can
practically stand still for about 3-4 bullets worth before having to slightly move
in either direction as long as you stay in front of Rumia.
- Stage 2:
On Easy/Normal mode, against Cirno's "Icicle Fall", the closer you are to
Cirno, the more yellow orbs she'll shoot. Keeping around center screen and
moving slightly to the left or right of an orb and waiting for an opportunity
to go to the right or left past all of the icicles is ideal. Keep in mind, the
yellow orbs shoot at your current position.
For Cirno's 2nd non-spell attack, the big white danmaku and laser are all
aimed at your current position, though with the big white damnaku, it's every
3-4 bullets that will home in on your current position. Moving slightly to the
left or right will help in keeping your position until the lasers are fired.
- Stage 3:
For the first part of the stage, and in the boss fight with Meiling, the enemies
that fire a long stream of kunais aim at your current position. On Easy and
Normal, you can move slightly to the left or right to dodge these (on Hard
or Lunatic, they become a bit tougher to dodge due to more kunais being
fired...).
During Meiling's "Colorful Rainbow Wind Chime", you really don't have to
move very much in any of the difficulties. Just slightly to the left and right
should do, as long as you're somewhat close to the middle of the bottom
of the screen (and on Hard or Lunatic, keep an eye out for stray rainbow
danmaku bullets).
- Stage 4:
During the fight with Patchouli, for both of her non-spell attacks, keeping
slightly to the left or right to the danmaku will make avoiding her Non-Directional
Laser much easier (make sure to note where the last laser's direction was, and go
in the opposite direction when Patchouli starts using her non-spell attack.
- Stage 5:
Near the start of the stage, after the first 2 fairies, head towards the middle
of the top of the screen and wait till the next 2 fairies shoot, then slightly
move either up or down to avoid their shots. You can also do this in the
same manner with the fairies after the next set in the same way.
During the mid-boss fight against Sakuya, you can avoid fighting her by
staying above her until time runs out. You can even hit her if you carefully
place your character's bottom border at the top of Sakuya. However, you
won't be able to get the extra life from Sakuya if you don't knock her life
down before time runs out.
Boss Specific Strategies
These are from my viewing of other people playing against the bosses,
as well as my own personal experience. To get the best out of this section
requires you to have at least some knowledge of the bosses, as well as being
able to test out your own strategies.
Mid Boss: When Rumia first enters the screen, try to stay in front of her
the entire time, otherwise, if you're not good at grazing and dodging, you
might find it a bit hard to get back into position to hit her again. For the
first attack, as soon as she fires, move to the left to about the middle of
the screen (just watch out for her lasers). For the 2nd attack, simply go down-left
towards the corner (about 3 characters away from the left side of the screen). This
is only recommended if you are at least good with dodging, since you'll need
to dodge a bullet at the last second. If you are not, then simply wait for
the bullets to come out, then follow around the bullets and continue to fire
at Rumia. For the 3rd attack, simply head back to the center of the screen.
At this point, you should take Rumia's life down.
For Hard/Lunatic Mode, when faced against "Moonlight Ray", simply move
slightly to the left or right of the first bullet, then wait till 3-4 bullets and then
move slightly again. When Rumia moves, try and follow her to wherever she
goes (since you'll more than likely get killed if you don't anyways).
Boss: Against Rumia, the first attack will ALWAYS be a spread shot, which
you can move slightly to the left and right, until the spread itself shows up,
in which case you'll need to move either around it or away from it, since
you can easily be trapped into a corner if Rumia decides to follow up with
her green spread shot, which is pretty tough, if not downright impossible,
to graze through. Her last attack for her 1st non-spell card is easy enough
to avoid, so no real need for a strategy there. Just keep in mind that the
red bullets home in to wherever your current position is and spreads out from
there. You can graze through the center of these bullets, but it's not recommended.
For the spell card "Night Bird", when it first starts, go to the bottom of
the middle of the screen, and focus on slightly moving left and right. You
shouldn't have to move too much except for when Rumia moves, in which
case you'll want to follow her.
For the 2nd non-spell phase, the green spread shot is now grazable through
the center of the bullets. The other 2 attacks should be easy enough to dodge
without needing a strategy.
For "Demarcation", it's just a matter of slipping through the first (and perhaps
the second, if you're bold enough) rings of danmaku and moving the way
that has the most space when Rumia fires her 3 blankets of danmaku. Don't
try to graze through these, since there's no spots to graze through. Keep
under Rumia while dodging all of the bullets, and you should be able to
capture this spellcard with no problems.
Mid Boss: Against Daiyousei, you really shouldn't have any problems
against the first two attacks, since all you need to do is move slightly to the
left or right to dodge them. For her third attack however, depending on how
confident you are, you can dodge the icicles that are being shot at you (not
the ones shot in a fan) by slightly moving left or right slowly at a time. On
Hard and Lunatic, you may have to move to the outer most part of the fan
and continue slightly moving, but make sure to move up!
Boss: For Cirno's first non-spell card, if you're bold enough, you can try and
dodge through the center of the icicles she throws at you. If you don't want
to chance it, just move to the far left or right, and wait till you hear the sound
of her shots being fired, then head to the other direction quickly in a U-shape.
After firing 3 shots, she'll shoot 3 shots worth of icicles that squeezes in and
fans out as they get closer to you. You can avoid these simply by moving either
slightly left or right, as long as you stay out of the range of the fan-area.
Keep in mind that the icicles she shoots at you will home in on your current
position! On higher difficulties, you'll have to be more swifter due to more
icicles being tossed your way, as well as "snowballs" being thrown in as
well.
Against "Icicle Fall" on Easy and Normal, simply stay halfway between the
bottom of the screen and Cirno. Keep in mind the closer you get to Cirno,
the more yellow orbs she'll shoot at you. Middle is safest to be, since you can
simply dodge the yellow orbs by slightly moving, and then dodge through
the icicles by going either straight left or right. Just keep an eye on an
opening in the icicles and take it. Also note that the yellow orbs home in
on your position and fans out as well.
On Hard/Lunatic, you'll have to deal with "Hailstorm" instead of Icicle Fall.
Here, you'll want to stay near the bottom of the screen and in as many large
openings as possible. This is all a matter of how well you can dodge and graze,
so there's not much I can say here to help aside from that.
For the 2nd non-spell attack, keep in mind that the big white danmakus home
in on your position every 3-4 shots, so you can avoid these by simply
moving left or right slightly. Also, note that the 3 lasers that Cirno shoots
about every 5-6 seconds home in on your current position as well and can
be dodged similarily. On higher difficulties, you'll also have smaller damnakus
to deal with that do not home in on your position.
For "Perfect Freeze", the best that I can advise here is to try and stay in big
openings and be careful to not be too hasty, since Cirno can stop her attacks
on a dime every 5-6 seconds before firing off a barrage of danmakus. And yes,
the frozen danmaku can kill you if you run into them, so be careful. After
Cirno fires her barrage of danmakus, she'll unfreeze the frozen danmaku and
repeat the pattern until you either force her out of the spell card or time runs
out on the spell card.
For "Diamond Blizzard", same thing applies here as it does to "Hailstorm",
except that it should be much easier to deal with than "Hailstorm". Just keep
an eye on the speed and movements of the icicles, and move accordingly.
Mid-Boss: Here, the very first attack will ALWAYS be a burst of white
orbs, which you'll have to keep an eye out for to see where to go. After that,
depending on difficulty, when Meiling teleports, she'll leave behind a ring of
red danmaku bullets, and after teleporting a second time, she'll leave a slow
ring of red orbs followed by another burst of white orbs and repeat the pattern
from there. Your best bet is to keep an eye on openings while trying to stay
under Meiling the entire time.
For Easy and Normal, against "Gorgeous Sweet Flower", all you really have
to do is keep an eye out on the patterns and move slightly left or right each
time. You can even use a bomb on Meiling if you don't care about capturing
the spell card. On Hard and Lunatic, you'll need to be even more cautious
when dealing with "Selaginella 9" if you intend to capture it, since there's
extra danmaku hidden in the patterns.
Boss: The first non-spell card may be a bit of a hazard for new players, since
you have to react slightly fast due to how fast the bullets fall. Carefully pick
an opening and try to move through it as fast as possible, since the bullets
can sometimes close openings quickly and trap you.
Against "Colorful Rainbow Wind Chime", try and stick to the middle of the
bottom of the screen. You shouldn't have to move very much at all on any
difficulty, as long as you watch for where the damnakus are at and move
swiftly and accordingly. Hard and Lunatic adds in a few extra danmakus,
making it a tad more difficult, but you still shouldn't have to move that much.
For Meiling's 2nd non-spell card, you'll have to put up with both Meiling's
white orbs and fairies that shoot "kunai lasers" at you. Keep in mind that
the kunais are aimed at your current position, so the same rule from the earlier
section about dodging them applies here. Just make sure to keep your fire
on Meiling and watch for where you're going. Avoid being against walls or
in corners too often.
For "Flower Imaginary Dream Vine", which you'll only see after the 2nd non-spell
card on Hard/Lunatic, the only advice I can give is to watch very closely and
move extremely quickly towards any openings, and try to stay in large openings.
This move requires a good bit of dodging and grazing skills, as well as
fast reactions, since some openings can quickly be closed off and trap you.
For Meiling's 3rd non-spell card, the blue kunais head right, while the red
kunais go left, and then Meiling will fire a shower of damnaku at you. Keeping
this in mind, for the blue damnaku, move to the left and when you see the
2nd to last blue kunai, start going to the right to avoid the red kunais. Dodge
the raining damnaku accordingly, since that should be no problem at all.
Against "Colorful Rain" and "Colorful Light Chaotic Dance", you really shouldn't
have to move that much except to either get in-between raining rainbow damnaku,
move up or down in these danmaku, or to keep under Meiling. There's really no
real strategy here except to watch where the stray rainbow danmaku are going
to go.
For "Extreme Color Typhoon", it's similar to how "Flower Imaginary Dream
Vine" is, or like a combination of it and "Diamond Blizzard". Try and stay in
large openings, and make sure to move fast since the danmaku moves fast
in this one.
Mid-Boss: Koakuma isn't particularly hard, even on higher difficulties.
Simply dodge between the giant orbs, and when she fires kunais, keep an
eye where the least amount of them are at, head towards that area, and
keep dodging between kunais and giant orbs till she goes down.
Boss: For the first and 2nd non-spell attacks that Patchouli uses, you can
dodge through the lasers as they start to dissipate (in other words, when they're
about to hit center of the screen, you can head through them). When she
starts shooting danmaku at you, slightly move IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION
of where the last laser was at. This way, after she starts shooting her lasers
again and shoots danmaku at you, you can easily escape through the laser
without having too much trouble with the danmaku being in the way. Note
that the danmaku in the lasers and without the lasers all home in at your current
position. The first non-spell card you can slightly move after every 3-4 bullets,
while the 2nd non-spell card, you'll have to move slightly after each bullet.
Now, for the Spell cards, I can only do so much (basically Reimu-A), since
Patchouli's spell card lists differs depending on difficulty as well as the
character and style you are using. However, they all pretty much require
moving about, since you can't really stand still and slightly move during
any of these spell cards save for possibly Mercury Poison. It's all about
watching for openings and taking them as soon as you can with Patchouli
in reality, combined with knowing what spells you'll be up against and how
the patterns go.
Mid Boss: Here, you can simply avoid fighting Sakuya if you just stay above
her the entire time. If you want to try and get the 1-Up from beating her, you'll
need sharp eyes and fast reflexes. More the reason here since her non-spell
card has a chance to trap you and kill you if you have no bombs, since you
can't graze through the kunais. Stay alert and go through any openings you
get.
For both "Misdirection" and "Illusional Misdirection", when you dodge the
kunais, make absolutely sure of where Sakuya's position is, since this will
affect how she throws her knives afterwards. The knives will home in on
your position and fan out, leaving little room for error (especially for "Illusional
Misdirection").
Boss: For all of Sakuya's non-spell cards, there's really NO definent pattern
to her attacks. You just have to be good at dodging and finding openings
to survive these.
For "Clock Corpse" and "Marionette", the best you can do is to wait till the
last second before the knives hits you and move in-between either side of
middle set of knives and the knives to either the left or right. You can attempt
to go completely around the knives, but this can end up with disastrous
results such as you ending up trapped and the like.
For "Luna Clock" and "The World", there's no real strategy here either.
You'll need to keep a sharp eye out since there'll be a ton of stuff to dodge
on the screen. As for "Marionette" and "Killing Doll", be very careful. Any
knives that didn't change directions the first time, may change directions the
2nd time. It's all a matter of skill at dodging and luck for this one.
Mid-Boss: Here is all about skillfull dodging for both her non-spell and
spell card. Not much else to say here. If you feel the need, use a bomb to
finish her off during her spell card if you don't care about capturing it.
Boss: For the first non-spell card attack, I'd recommend staying near the
center of the bottom of the screen. This gives you more leeway to dodge
if you need to move farther away. This attack itself shouldn't be that hard
to avoid.
For "Star of David" and "Young Demon Lord", you'll want to try and stay near
the bottom-center, left, or right of the screen, whichever has the biggest
openings. This'll leave you with more room to dodge the giant orbs that'll
be shot at you, as well as setting you up to move to the next big area if you
can. The attack itself shouldn't be hard to avoid.
For the 2nd non-spell card, the first shots will be aimed at where your current
position is, while the 2nd shot is shot clockwise, 3rd shot counter-clockwise,
and the 4th shot back at your current position, then repeats itself. I'd recommend,
for the 2nd and 3rd shots, to try and dodge in the opposite direction that
Remilia is shooting to give you more room and set-up for the next shot.
Make sure to watch out for the speed of the danmaku and the tiny red
orbs!
For "Scarlet Netherworld" and "Mountain of a Thousand Needles", it's all
about knowing how to move around and dodge yet again. Not much strategy
I can give here.
For the 3rd non-spell card, you shouldn't have any problems with it at all,
considering all that you've put up with. It's rather similar to Daiyousei's
kunais. I'd recommend staying near the center of the bottom of the screen
for this one, or at least keep under Remilia.
For "Curse of Vlad Tepes" and "Vampire Illusion", once again, it comes down
to dodging skills. You can't really stay in one spot for too long due to the
swirling knives and the constantly moving red danmaku. Not much advice
I can give on this one.
For the 4th non-spell card, the first attack plays similarily to Meiling's non-spell
falling danmaku, so you should be able to deal with this accordingly. The
2nd attack is a bit more difficult, since it comes out extremely fast. Focus on
only slightly moving to the left or right, since the orbs are aimed at your current
spot. The last attack is done in the same way, but is not nearly as fast as the
2nd attack is. Also note that while Remilia is in bat form, you cannot
hurt her.
For "Scarlet Shoot" and "Scarlet Meister", the first attack is always a spread
shoot, which you should dodge by going to around the left or right corners,
while avoiding the hidden 2nd shot. After that, Remilia will shoot a single
shot that will home in on your current position, which you cannot graze between.
Make sure to move to the left or right as soon as the shot is fire. After that,
she'll shoot another spread shot, then the pattern repeats.
For the last spell cards "Red Magic" and "Scarlet Gensokyo", it all comes back
to how well you can dodge. Also note that bombs are ineffective against
Remilia during these spell cards, since she'll just turn into a bat. Still, don't
forget to use them to save your life if you need to, and good luck!
