Reimu Hakurei, the Shrine Maiden of Paradise

The shrine maiden of Gensokyo. Being tired of being cold day in and day out and wondering where spring was, Reimu set out to find out the cause of this unnatural weather and fix it.

• Has the smallest penalty for using bombs, and the biggest Border of Life. Still retains her dodging abilities from EoSD that allows her to focus more on dodging.

• Has the smallest hitbox of the 3 main characters.

• Starts with 3 bombs, focused speed is Slow, and Normal speed is Medium.

Marisa Kirisame, an Ordinary Magician

A magician who is mostly allies with Reimu. She goes off on her own after wondering if spring is happening elsewhere.

• Marisa is still the fastest of the three playable characters, and is still the strongest of the 3, but once again, relies on being under the enemy to do any real damage.

• Has the biggest penalty for bombs, but the most powerful bomb in the game (Master Spark)

• Medium speed in Focused mode and starts with 2 bombs

• Lowest Auto-Collection Boundary of the 3 main characters, and lowest threshold for maximum item value

Sakuya Izayoi, Perfect and Elegant Maid

The head maid of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. She heads out to find the cause of the unnatural weather since the winter stock is getting low and she too is tired of the weather.

• Has a wider and versatile attack setting than Reimu, but requires timing and maneuverability to get working right.

• Has the biggest grazing box of the 3 playable characters.

• Medium speed while unfocused and Fastest speed of the 3 characters while Focused

• Average penalty for bombs, and fewest Cherry Points lost when hit

• Starts with 4 bombs

Cirno, Youkai of the Ice

The ice fairy of Misty Lake. She is only a mid-boss of Stage 1 this time around, and attacks the heroine yet again just out of spite. She is quickly beaten again however...

Letty Whiterock, What Winter Left Behind

A Youkai who is only seen during winter. She attacks the heroine to prevent them from ending the winter, but never attacks seriously, since she knows that spring comes every year regardless.

Chen, Black Cat of Bad Omens

A shikigami guarding the village of Mayohiga, whom was easily defeated by the heroines. Later on, during the Extra stage, Chen acts as the mid-boss and is much more powerful due to being closer to her master.

A magician from Makai. Alice is the mid-bosses and boss of Stage 3. She fights the heroines for no reason at all, mainly because they just so happen to be there. She has a love/hate relationship with Marisa, and her strong point is puppetry and magic.

Lily White, Fairy Herald of Spring

A fairy that is seen to bring about the news of spring coming. However, her way of telling the heroines is to throw barrages of barrages of danmaku bullets your way. She later appears in Phantasmagoria of Flower View as a special enemy.

• Lily is the only mid-boss and boss in the game that does not use any spell cards.

The Prismriver Sisters

A trio of poltergeist musicians that were invited to perform in the Netherworld at Yuyuko's mansion. The battle is different depending on the character you are using and which sister you focus attacking the most when all 3 are out at once. Therefore, if you're expecting to catch all of their spell cards, don't expect it in one go. You'll have to fight them multiple times and choose who to fight each time to get them all.

Youmu Konpaku, Ghostly Gardener

A half-human half-ghost gardener who is the servant of Yuyuko. She takes care of the garden in the Netherworld and keeps intruders from coming into the garden. Youmu is the mid-boss and boss of Stage 5, as well as the mid-boss of Stage 6.

• It is important to note that Youmu does not possess the ability to stop time. It is in fact that she moves so fast that time slows down around her. Also, when she slows down time, everything, including you and all attacks, are slowed down as well, so take advantage of the slowdown to graze through Youmu's deadly attacks.

Yuyuko Saigyouji, the Departed Maiden of the Pavilion of Dark and Light

The boss of Stage 6 and the one who ordered Youmu to steal Gensokyo's spring so she could make the Saigyou Ayakasi, a youkai cherry blossom tree, to fully bloom and break the seal on a spirit within it. Master of Hakugyokurou, the garden of the Netherworld. Yuyuko has the power to invoke death in mortals, which lead to her suicide while she was alive 1000 years ago. She became the master of Hakugyokurou through Sikieiki, though she gradually forgot who she was and her past life. Had her friend Yukari Yakumo weaken the border between this world and the Netherworld to proceed with her plans.

A fox shikigami who was preparing for a banquet for her master. She fought the heroines after finding out that they were the ones who defeated Chen, who is her shikigami. She later returns as the mid-boss of the Phantasm stage, but fights just like Chen does in Extra.

Yukari Yakumo, the Mastermind Behind the Spiriting Away

The Youkai of Boundaries who weakened the border between the Netherworld and Gensokyo at the request of Yuyuko. She is only awake during the night, and hibernates throughout winter. She usually lets her shikigami, Ran, handle all of her business while she sleeps, but was surprised when she found out Ran had been defeated. After being defeated by the heroines, Yukari restores the border between the Netherworld and Gensokyo. Yukari also knows Yuyuko from when she was alive, and also knows about the Saigyou Ayakashi and what's keeping it sealed...
